The Marching Band rehearses from the beginning of school until approximately the first week of November. Most of our students choose to take additional early bird class after marching band ends!

  • Can I do Band AND sports or clubs?

ABSOLUTELY! We have had every sport and club represented over the years in our program, even football! Students who choose to participate in both extracurriculars and the performing arts just need to manage their schedules well and communicate any conflicts in advance so they can be resolved. We are PROUD of all our students who take on extra activities in high school!

  • Is Band Camp Required?

Yes - Band Camp is always the 2 weeks before school begins. It is the time when we get the most work done for the upcoming school year. Additionally, we have lots of team activities that help to build strong relationship and rapport with their peers. This is especially important for incoming students who will have a chance to make lifelong friendships before their first day of High School!

  • Will I be able to keep up with homework and other academic responsibilities if I'm in the band?

ABSOLUTELY! The students in the band program are some of the most academically disciplined at GV. There is a wealth of research documenting the correlation between participation in school music programs- particularly instrumental music- and higher test scores and academic achievement. Band students find that they are learning to manage their time more efficiently. A large percentage of the students participate in AP and IB programs.

  • How much time outside of school is required?

The many ensembles have different requirements for participation. The more involved in the program a student is , the more commitment. Generally, the greater the level of commitment, the greater the reward and memories. Regardless of the ensemble, a year-long calendar will be provided well in advance to help you plan for these events.

  • Does the Band Travel?

Yes - There are many opportunities for groups to travel. We believe in the power of sharing our music with others as well as the benefits in student travel. Each year we plan trips but they may vary on which group travels. The band has travel the United States to perform in some of the most prestigious venues as well as Internationally in Italy, Ireland, England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, China, Scotland…..just to name a few! Don’t worry, there is plenty of fundraising opportunities to help defray the cost of travel!

  • What are the costs associated with this activity?

The costs associated with music depend on which ensembles your child participates in and what events they participate in. The band fees are divided into three main categories; Concert Only (students who are just in a band class), Marching Band (students who are in marching band) and Colorguard (students who are members of the colorguard). The band boosters and staff work together to provide fundraising opportunities and financial help for each and every child and ensure that no one is excluded due to financial issues.

  • What if I don't own my own instrument?

The school has an inventory of instrument available for check-out upon request. Students are responsible for the upkeep and cleaning of these instruments while in their possession. All Instruments are on “first come-first serve” basis until our inventory is gone. Contact the band office to rent an instrument today!
